Cop held for groping woman on train

YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) A 47-year-old Tokyo policeman was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of molesting a female passenger on a JR Tokaido Line train in Yokohama's Totsuka Ward, police said.

Kanagawa Prefectural Police identified the suspect as Takashi Kobayashi, a police sergeant with the Metropolitan Police Department and a Totsuka Ward resident.

Kobayashi allegedly groped the 28-year-old woman's body before being subdued and turned over to police by her and a male passenger, police said, adding he was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

During police questioning, Kobayashi allegedly admitted to being drunk at the time but denied he molested the woman.

Kobayashi joined the MPD in 1975 and worked at various police stations before being transferred to the MPD headquarters in the Kasumigaseki district.

His superior, Shinichiro Takagi, said the Tokyo police deplore the incident and would instruct other policemen to fully recognize their responsibilities as members of the police force.
