Suspended term for cop in drug case

YOKOHAMA (Kyodo) The Yokohama District Court on Monday handed a 38-year-old former assistant inspector in the Kanagawa Prefectural Police a suspended 18-month prison term for using amphetamines.

Yoshihisa Sakayori, who pleaded guilty to the charges, admitted during his first trial hearing that he had a woman friend inject him with the drugs at her condominium in Yokohama on Dec. 12, 1996.

The incident led to Japan's biggest police scandal, in which the Kanagawa force turned over to prosecutors their case against six senior officials and three other officers who allegedly covered up Sakayori's drug abuse.

Five of them, including a former chief, Motoo Watanabe, were indicted in December on charges of playing key roles in the coverup.

Prosecutors, who demanded an 18-month prison term for Sakayori, said the defendant used marijuana with the woman in August 1996 and started taking amphetamines after he could no longer gain satisfaction from marijuana.

Police launched an investigation into the coverup in September.
